Antique English pottery Prattware puzzle jug. This piece is an exceptionally fine quality example of Prattware with excellent potting and wonderful hand painted pictures of a castle in a rural setting and a chinoserie style temple. A superb piece of Prattware pottery.A puzzle jug was a form popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The owner of the jug would challenge a fellow drinker to consume the contents without spilling , which, because the neck of the jug is perforated, is impossible to do conventionally. Quite often wagers would be made in the tavern and one can imagine much merriment was made of the unsuspecting punter in his attempt to crack the hidden trick for succesful pouring.
