Antique Staffordshire figure of a bull baiting group on a table base by Obadiah Sherratt c1820. This figure is a very rare size and is boldly modelled and enamel coloured.
The base is 9 inches long and is a rare four footed example.
The figure of the showman/farmer has been replaced as has one of the dogs.
This work has been excellently executed by a master and is one of the best conservation works I have seen.

Chapter 13 details the position of bull baiting in English Society and has numerous illustrations of figures related to this "sport" which was outlawed in 1835.Myrna notes that the last recorded Bull Baiting took place in 1853
