Description
A fine and rare pottery loving cup from the mid 18th century.
The cup is decorated in “Scratch Blue” saltglaze stoneware with typical floral and trailing leaves. The piece is also inscribed with the date 1765 and the name Martha Steel.
Dated pieces from this period are wonderful surviving reminders of a past gift probably commemorating a birthday or special event.
Scratch blue decoration is also a rare find as these pieces from over 250 years ago rarely appear on the market. Most examples are exhibited in museums and/or major private collections.
Most of these saltglaze wares were produced by the Staffordshire potters, however, Bovey Tracey a small pottery works in Devon also made wonderful pieces these frequently named and dated.
