Description
Pair of plain creamware pottery candlesticks in the classic silver shape in style in the late 18thc. produced at the Whitehead Pottery in Hanley Staffordshire.
EXHIBITION …..IF THESE POTS COULD TALK.
Plain undecorated English pottery creamware is one of my favorites from the English potters.
Quite often these creamware shapes were derived from silver shapes. This classical design from the 18th century has never been surpassed and is a reflection of the style and taste of the middle classes in this period. This pair of creamware candlesticks would have been used when Lord Nelson was battling the French.
I find candlesticks to be very evocative pieces and one can only wonder at the conversations they have witnessed in their 200 year journey through time. I hope some were about love and peace and not war.
