This Staffordshire pottery pearlware glazed amusing patriotic figure shows John Bull seated, holding a jug of ale and a massive side of beef resting on his lap. The enamel colors are high quality and well applied. His well-fed, pimpled, and smiling countenance clearly reflects the results of his diet. His name is inscribed on the base. Many English people still look upon John Bull with affection. He is the personification of the English character: honest, generous, straightforward, with a zest for life, and ready to stand up and fight for his beliefs. Uncle Sam is the American equivalent.
