This Staffordshire pottery stoneware salt-glazed figure with cobalt blue splashes represents Spinario, a young boy sitting on a rock intent on removing a thorn from his foot, probably from treading grapes during the harvest. The figure is inspired by the early Greek and later Roman and Renaissance pieces discovered with the popularity of the British on their educational quest, the Grand Tour.
