Description
This Staffordshire pottery pearlware theatrical figure depicts John Liston, a famous comedian popular for his character portrayal of Lubin Log, a conceited cockney, which he performed in James Kenney’s play Love, Law and Physic at Covent Garden Theatre on 20 November 1812. Lubin Log’s story tells of how he came into money and set out to secure a wife. This figure shows Lubin with the gifts he hopes will entice the lady, which was, sadly, to no avail.
The figure is exceptionally well modeled and with good attention to modeling and applying the bright enamels, the back of the base impressed SALT.
