Nottingham brown stoneware saltglaze bear ale jug circa 1775

This salt-glazed stoneware compact, smaller-sized bear jug was made in Nottingham in the mid-18th century. It is unusually modeled holding a stick rather than fighting a dog. The figure has a good lustrous glaze on the applied " grog" coat. The jug intended to hold ale the head of the bear is removable and could be used as a cup.    

Dimensions: 9 inches high

Current Condition: Professionally restored to chip and crack at the head cover.

Provenance: Previously with Jonathan Horne retains his label.
