Description
This Herculaneum Liverpool pottery creamware large pitcher is decorated with a moving underglaze black and white transfer image of The Death Of Nelson at Cadiz on October 21st, 1805. Nelson is portrayed lying in his cabin aboard HMS Victory, mortally wounded, attended by three concerned figures. The transfer print on the reverse of this historic pitcher shows Britannia and Hope weeping against a monumental obelisk, trees in the background, and evocatively a ship under sail in the distance.
The base of the monument is inscribed with Nelson’s famous message to his men: “England Expects every man to do his duty.”
